On June 5th, the “Newton 3 Drone Racing Event” was held at the Multi-Purpose Hall of the Úbeda Fairgrounds. This pioneering educational project in Andalusia aims to foster students’ interest in technological fields (STEAM) and saw participation from ATLAS and CATEC as collaborators.

This innovative learning experience, driven by IES Los Cerros alongside the INNOVASUR Foundation and with logistical support from BluRecords, aims to apply computational thinking and enhance students’ digital skills through programmable drones.

A total of 22 teams, each composed of 5 students from various educational centers in Jaén, participated in the drone competition and exhibition, throughout a day filled with technology and innovation activities. During this event, our colleague Baldomero Padilla Tallante from the Flight Test Unit served as a jury member, representing the ATLAS center.

“This is an innovative learning experience driven by IES Los Cerros, along with the INNOVASUR Foundation and with logistical support from BluRecords, aiming to practically apply computational thinking and enhance students’ digital skills through programmable drones. It was a pleasure for me to experience this intense event, especially since it was held in my hometown, Úbeda!” said Baldomero.

The students were able to compete with the rest of the teams in 3 modalities: programmed flight, in which they applied the knowledge and skills acquired throughout this academic year, simulated flight, to obtain the two best times in 5 minutes of high intensity flight, and finally piloted flight. In a total of six tasks, the teams, represented by a pilot, flew their drones in races of 4 and 3 teams, depending on the tasks and the draw, with one of the two teams representing the Juan Pasquau School of Úbeda being proclaimed Champion of Champions.

From ATLAS, we congratulate all the participating boys and girls, advocating for these types of innovative initiatives to promote technological careers among young people!
